An atmosphere of grief

Climate breakdown requires us to confront a tremendous feeling of grief.

An atmosphere with grief is a series of essays about the emerging phenomenon of ecological or climate grief. Taken from the two lectures I presented at the Royal College of Art, these four long-form essays describe how we are living through the sixth mass extinction that many people are experiencing profound feelings of loss and grief. However, more than being a monumental one-off in human civilisation, these feelings and experiences have echoes to previous events in human history.

This first essay charts the story.
